Foundation and Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative

The Foundation and Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative has been actively engaged in research on criminal justice issues, providing training for prisoner paralegals and prison staff, developing advocacy materials, making submissions to parliamentary committees, and striving to improve access to legal assistance at Dasna District Jail in Ghaziabad.

The Law and Marginalisation Clinic

Situated within the Centre for Justice, Law, and Society, the Law and Marginalisation Clinic is a community outreach and legal aid initiative that unites activists, movements, scholars, and community members. Established in 2013, the clinic’s legal aid initiative responds to the growing need for legal aid and capacity-building among transgender and gender-diverse individuals. The goals of the clinic are shaped by its collaborators and allies in the Trans Justice and SRHR movement.

The clinic has been instrumental in providing targeted legal interventions, including court interventions, legal advice, drafting representations, and legal counseling. It addresses critical issues such as legal name and gender changes on identity documents, equal opportunities in education and employment, police harassment, negligence in gender-affirmative surgery, and fair housing. Over the past three years, the clinic has handled 74 cases, with four currently before the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court of India. Student paralegals also contribute to the clinic’s legal aid efforts.

Eligibility

– A minimum of two years of post-qualification experience (PQE) in litigation is required.

– Candidates must hold an undergraduate law degree.

– Lawyers with litigation experience in Haryana courts are particularly encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

– Manage legal aid cases, including client meetings, drafting, filing, and coordinating with lawyers and court staff.

– Oversee the legal aid work of the Clinics, including case management, legal consultations, and drafting and research for active cases before judicial forums.

– Facilitate client meetings and draft legal notices, letters, and other materials for the Clinics’ legal aid work.

– Support the Clinics’ legal policy interventions and advocacy efforts.

– Assist with legal training, counseling, and awareness activities conducted by the Clinics.

– Supervise paralegals, interns, and students involved in the Clinics’ legal aid initiatives.

– Undertake any additional tasks as required by the Office of the Vice Dean for Clinical Legal Education.

Salary

– The position is full-time and based in Sonipat, Haryana.

– The salary ranges from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 60,000 per month, depending on experience.
